What drives contract Azure engineer day rates?

Two contract Azure engineers with similar CVs can quote very different day rates. Understanding why helps you budget properly and avoid overpaying — or underpaying and losing the candidate.

1. Seniority and ownership

The biggest factor is whether the engineer designs and owns solutions or implements someone else's design. Architects and senior engineers who can make decisions alone command significantly more than mid-level engineers working from runbooks.

2. Specialism

Generic Azure administration sits at the lower end. Rates rise for niche, in-demand skills: landing-zone design, complex networking, identity and Entra ID, Kubernetes on AKS, infrastructure-as-code at scale, and cloud security.

3. IR35 status (UK)

Outside-IR35 roles usually attract stronger candidates at a given rate, because the contractor keeps more of what they earn. Inside-IR35 roles often need a higher headline rate to compete. Our IR35 vs 1099 guide explains the difference.

4. Location and time-zone overlap

London-based engineers generally cost more than those elsewhere in the UK. Global engineers can be far more cost-effective, but you need to decide how many hours of overlap with your team you really need. For many project roles, a few shared hours a day is enough.

5. Urgency and length

A two-week emergency start will cost more than a six-month engagement planned a month ahead. Longer contracts can usually be negotiated to a lower day rate.

How to get an accurate rate for your role

Rates move with the market, so any published table goes stale quickly. The fastest way to get a realistic figure is to share your role, stack, IR35 position and timeline with us — we'll give you a current range and show you candidates at different price points across UK, US and global talent pools.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Azure contractor day rates vary so much?
Seniority, specialism, IR35 status, location and urgency all move the rate. Design-level engineers with niche skills cost the most.
Are offshore cloud engineers cheaper?
Usually, yes. The trade-off is time-zone overlap, so decide how many shared hours the role really needs.
