How to hire a Microsoft Sentinel engineer

Microsoft Sentinel is easy to switch on and hard to run well. Many teams turn it on, connect a few data sources and then wonder why they are paying for noisy alerts nobody trusts. A good Sentinel engineer fixes that. Here's what the role involves, what to look for and when contract makes sense.

What a Sentinel engineer actually does

A Sentinel engineer builds and looks after the SIEM itself, rather than working the alert queue. That is the main difference from a SOC analyst, who investigates what the SIEM produces. Typical work includes:

Why demand is up right now

Microsoft is moving Sentinel management out of the Azure portal and into the unified Microsoft Defender portal. Microsoft has extended the date for managing Sentinel in the Azure portal to 31 March 2027, but many teams are using the extra time to plan the move properly — reviewing workspaces, permissions, automation and how the SOC will work day to day in the new interface. That is specialist, time-boxed work, and it is one reason contract Sentinel roles are appearing alongside permanent ones.

Skills to look for

KQL, properly. This is the non-negotiable. A strong candidate can write queries that join tables, summarise over time and exclude known-good activity without hiding real threats. Ask them to write one live.

Connector and data experience. Have they onboarded awkward sources, such as on-premises syslog or a third-party firewall, not just the one-click Microsoft connectors? Do they understand which data is worth ingesting and which is just cost?

Detection engineering. Look for someone who can explain why a rule exists, what it maps to (for example MITRE ATT&CK) and how they measured whether tuning made it better.

Automation. Playbooks save analysts hours, but badly built ones can lock out users or close real incidents. Ask what guardrails they put in place.

The wider Microsoft security stack. Sentinel rarely sits alone. Familiarity with Defender XDR, Defender for Cloud and Entra ID makes the engineer far more useful.

Certifications such as Microsoft's SC-200 show familiarity with the platform, but treat them as a baseline. What matters is evidence of building and tuning Sentinel in a real environment.

Interview questions that reveal real experience

Contract, permanent or contract-to-hire?

Contract works well when the work has a clear scope: a new deployment, a migration from another SIEM, a Defender portal transition or a detection clean-up. A contractor can bring experience from several environments and hand over a tidier platform to your team. If you need someone to own detections and the SIEM roadmap for years, a permanent hire or contract-to-hire is usually better.

In the UK, every contract engagement needs an IR35 status decision; in the US, contractor classification rules apply. Our IR35 vs 1099 guide covers the basics, but take professional advice for your own situation.

Don't forget coverage

A well-built Sentinel still needs people watching it. If the real gap is out-of-hours monitoring rather than engineering, pair your engineer with analysts in other time zones or a SOC-as-a-Service arrangement that works inside your existing Sentinel workspace.

We place Sentinel engineers, detection engineers and SOC analysts through our cybersecurity recruitment service, vetted on hands-on KQL and real deployments rather than keywords. If you are planning a Sentinel build, migration or tune-up, get in touch and tell us what you're working with.

Frequently asked questions

Is SC-200 enough to hire a Sentinel engineer?
SC-200 shows a candidate knows the platform's features, but it doesn't prove they have built or tuned Sentinel in a live environment. Treat it as a baseline and test hands-on KQL, connector and automation experience in the interview.
Should I hire a Sentinel engineer on contract or permanently?
Contract suits defined projects such as a deployment, a SIEM migration, a Defender portal transition or a detection tuning exercise. If you need someone to own detections long term, consider permanent or contract-to-hire. In the UK, check IR35 status for each engagement and take professional advice where needed.
